CPI, Inc. | Palo Alto, CA

Communications & Power Industries (CPI) develops, manufactures and globally distributes components and subsystems used in the generation, amplification, transmission and reception of microwave signals for a wide variety of systems. An RFP was issued to replace a very old centrifugal chiller in order to provide a reliable system and improve energy efficiency.

    Project Requirements

The scope of the project was to provide a new, 400-ton centrifugal chiller to replace the existing #2 chiller in the mechanical plant. The intent of the project was to provide a new chiller that would improve energy efficiency while matching the existing pumping capabilities and power limitations, have a delivery time that met with CPI’s requirements and that would fit
    in a tight spot.

    What ACCO Delivered

ACCO’s engineers got started on the project reviewing the existing conditions and coming up with some possible replacements for the chiller. After reviewing the options, ACCO selected a York YK chiller as the best choice.
One of the biggest obstacles faced was the location of the existing chiller and what would be the best way to remove the old one and rig the new unit in place. The mechanical plant is located on the second floor of the building with no easy access. We looked at opening the roof and rigging the chiller from above but decided the most efficient method would be to remove the old unit in pieces and have the new chiller shipped disassembled then re-assembled in place.
In spite of some delivery delays, ACCO was able to meet the schedule and the new chiller was operational in time for the first heat wave.
