L.A. Live | Los Angeles, CA

Completed in 2009, L.A. LIVE! is a one-of-a-kind entertainment and hospitality complex build across from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The multi-use facility includes a 54-story 1,001 room Marriott/Ritz Carlton Hotel and 225 luxury residences with an adjacent 220,000 square foot conference center. Entertainment venues include the Nokia Theatre (7,100 seats), Club Nokia (2,200 seats), Grammy Museum and many other entertainment services. Corporate headquarters for AEG and Herbalife are integrated into the project which includes broadcast facilities, subterranean parking garages, and support areas.

    Project Requirements

Olympic & Georgia Partners and AEG assembled a design-build MEP team to work alongside Gensler, RTKL, ESL and other design consultants. LEED certification, energy efficiency, and an aggressive design/construction schedule were all required while maintaining the project budgets.

    What ACCO Delivered

ACCO contracted directly with AEG to provide HVAC design services. ACCO’s engineering department was involved in critical design and planning while incorporating the Marriott and Ritz design requirements. We led the MEP and architectural coordination to ensure the systems fit with the architectural and structural design. A major challenge on this project was that construction had to start before the design was complete. ACCO engineering worked hand-in-hand with our construction crews to provide the necessary design information required. Additionally, there were numerous owner changes that were incorporated into the design and construction that were accomplished within the accelerated 24-month schedule for the hotel and conference center. The project included 4 central chilled water plants totaling 4,200 tons, and 4 boiler plants totaling 28,000 MBH. Chilled and hot water piping was distributed to 1,200,000 CFM of air handlers and 1,100 fan coils. There are more than 150 ventilation systems including all the required smoke control systems. The residences were served by a rooftop condenser water system with condenser water distributed to more than 330 heat pumps. ACCO crews installed more than 1,850,000 pounds of sheet metal and more than 80,000 feet of piping.
