The Sacramento International Airport recently celebrated the opening of the new Terminal B for its $1.1-billion terminal modernization program: the Big Build. The “Big Build” is the largest public construction project in Sacramento County’s history. In addition to the expanded airline capacity and the Automated People Mover, the new Terminal B also features top-notch area restaurants and eye-catching artwork including a 56-foot tall red rabbit.
Project Requirements
ACCO was a key player in this design-assist project delivery system, bridging the 30% design level drawings to a completed construction project, ahead of schedule and under budget.
What ACCO Delivered
As the largest construction project in Sacramento County, success required significant cooperation between the project team members. ACCO was the only contractor selected to work on both the Landside and the Secured Air side of the project.
ACCO acted as the BIM coordination team leader and participated in the design-assist process from the 30% design level. ACCO installed bent hydronic piping in the bridge-tunnel of the Automated People Mover (APM). The job accounted for more than 210,000 field man-hours (HVAC piping, sheet metal and plumbing) and lasted for 32 months.
Due to the IPD project team structure, the project was finished ahead of schedule and under budget.
This project is a Registered LEED Silver building. Design features include Cogen with hot water absorption chiller, condensing boilers and high-efficiency chillers. Design and detailing both took place onsite; streamlining trade coordination and design modifications.
